在过去，当你创建了一个网址或者一个网络应用，你却在很大程度上局限于选择某些“网络安全”字体，比如Times和Arial字体。如果你不使用这些字体，则需要用Adobe Flash或者将文本嵌入图像中，那又会带来一整套新的利弊权衡方式。比如，图像是非语义的，不能自动地翻译成其它语言，且它的文件大小要比文本大得多。同时，图像中的文本不能复制到用户的剪贴板上，不能通过屏幕阅读软件阅读，也不能很容易地被搜索引擎收录。

，你的网页现在可以使用成百上千的网络安全字体。
在去年五月推出的
Google网络字体让你轻松选择你想在你的网页、博客或者网页应用上使用的字体，并将此功能嵌入到HTML和CSS中。在三十秒内，你的网页上就会出现漂亮的字体，完美地呈现在大多数
流行的网络浏览器
中。你再也不需要使用图像或者Flash来嵌入你想使用的字体。
不像Times和Arial这两种安装在用户本地计算机上的字体，网络字体通过浏览器请求来供应（和图像提供的方式相似）。那意味着你可以在用户计算机上载入任何网络字体。用户会非常高兴地发现这些字体就像Arial字体一样在文本中正确呈现。
网络字体技术被迅速采用。Google网络字体现在每天处理约五千万个请求[1]，覆盖大约八十万个独特网站[2]，并以每月约30%的速度增长。在Google，我们对于网络字体改变网络结构的潜能感到十分激动。漂亮的印刷字体使网络浏览变得更加愉悦、有表现力、富有趣味。
